Agriculture

Almost all the land in Hale County is under cultivation. Water wells are used to irrigate the land. Water in these wells is typically found at about 200 feet depth. The average well in Hale County will pump about 400 gallons per minute. Cotton and grains are the principle types of crops raised in the County.

Railroad

The Burlington Northern-Sante Fe Railroad serves Plainview on the main line between Lubbock and Amarillo.

Motor Freight

Federal Express, UPS, Central, Yellow, Roadway, SAIA, WSKT, Wilson Trucking Company, and Beaver Express provide motor freight service in Plainview.

Wayland Baptist University

WBU educational system headquarters are located in Plainview where a pioneer doctor established it in 1908. They have campuses in Lubbock, Amarillo, San Antonio, and Wichita Falls, Texas; Clovis and Albuquerque, New Mexico; Altus, Oklahoma; Phoenix and Sierra Vista, Arizona; Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska; and Honolulu Hawaii. The university offers undergraduate degrees in many major academic fields of study and graduate degrees in business, education, science, and religion. South Plains College

South Plains College is a comprehensive, two-year community college that serves the greater South Plains area of Texas with innovative educational programs that span the arts and sciences, technical education, continuing education and workforce development. Serving a 15-county area that comprises the southern portion of the Texas High Plains, the college's main campus is located in Levelland. SPC maintains two extension centers in Lubbock that are located at the Reese Center and the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center. Country Club

The Plainview Country Club has banquet facilities that accommodate 400 people. They have an 18-hole golf course (open to the public). The swimming pool and restaurant are opened to members only.

Unger Memorial Library

The library has approximately 50,000 books on its shelves. The library began in 1912, and was expanded in 1960, and1967. There is also a genealogy and local history collection within the Library.

Llano Estacado Museum

The museum opened in 1976 and has exhibits dating from pre-man through the 1920s. They have approximately 10,000 visitors annually. The Museum is opened daily 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1:00 5:00 pm, 1:00 5:00 p.m. on weekends.

Plainview Airport

The Hale County Airport has approximately 24,000 planes land and takeoff each year. There are two lighted runways: 4,000 feet and 5,997 feet long that are capable of handling small jet aircraft. YMCA

Symphony

The Plainview Symphony Orchestra performs 4 events annually. The Music Department at Wayland Baptist University sponsors the Symphony and performs in the Universities Auditorium.
